“Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured.”
~ B.K.S. Iyengar

At Shoonya Shala, we celebrate Hatha Yoga practices which have been passed down from teacher to student over thousands of years. Whether you enjoy our Hatha Flow class or a Sivananda Hatha Yoga practice, we use props to overcome the individual student’s challenge, brought about by unique skeletal variations and body proportions.

We delight in Yin Yoga, a practice that promotes inner tranquillity and flexibility in muscles, joints and connective tissue. We also use Thai Bodywork techniques to stretch and relax students.

You can enjoy a variety in class sequencing and a practice based on your individual needs. Assisted yoga, and a fusion of Hatha and Yin attitudes supported by Thai Yoga stretches will bring you into health and balance. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced practitioner, Shoonya Shala reminds you that 'Breath is Central to Yoga and Yoga is Life'.

Ajay and Sapna pursue a continuing education in Yoga, immersing themselves in the study of anatomy, yogic texts and pranayama. They often return to Kerala, Koh Samui (Thailand) and Indonesia to imbibe knowledge from accomplished teachers. Jointly, they share more than 2,000 hours in Yoga and Yoga Therapy Training.

Ajay is passionate about the inner engineering of the body and mind. Athletic and adventurous, Ajay experienced several physical injuries, and was able to heal them by following the Ahimsa (non-violent) approach in asana practise.

He visits yoga ashrams in India and yoga sanctuaries in South East Asia to deepen his practice. At present, he’s diving deeper into the study of anatomy, to understand how skeletal variations can affect asana practise. This helps him guide students to postures that are safest and most beneficial. Currently Ajay is fulfilling a cherished dream; he’s studying with Leslie Kaminoff, world renowned yoga educator and author of Yoga Anatomy, an international bestseller.

Ajay's choice of teachers is as fascinating as the places where he chooses to study. He holds all his teachers in high esteem, and outside of India, his favourite schools are in Bali and Koh Samui. Ajay became a teacher because he fell in love with his yoga practice and of course, the travel perks associated with teaching yoga! He served as a voluntary teacher at Sivananda Centres in Gurgaon, before beginning independent practice with Sapna, his wife and partner.

Sapna grew up in physiotherapy rooms, watching her mother, a well recognized physiotherapist, at work with clients. Sapna was fascinated by movement, healing and the intimate knowledge of the body that she was introduced to, over her early developmental years. As a result, Sapna’s yoga classes are healing, but can also be challenging. The challenge is not merely physical at the gross level, but mentally challenging to the student. Through her class, students straddle the space between comfort and challenge.

Sapna is a Thai Bodywork Therapist and Senior Sivananda teacher, however as a yoga practitioner, she enjoys Yin Yoga. As a woman and a mother, she is keen to share her knowledge of Hormonal Therapy, Pre-Natal and Post-Natal Yoga. Currently she takes one-on-one classes and also teaches voluntarily at the Sivananda Centres in Gurgaon. Sapna’s favorite yoga vacation destinations are in Indonesia and Rajasthan, India. She frequently returns to Thailand to practise and study Thai Bodywork.

Sapna and Ajay are senior teachers in the Sivananda Yoga tradition, having completed Senior Teacher Training (RYT 500 – Yoga Alliance) from Sivananda Yoga Vidyapeetham, with Swami Govindananda and Swami Tattvarupananda in the Himalayas and Kerala, India. Sapna has also studied Hormone Therapy with Shakti Simone Lehner, while Ajay completed Yin Yoga Teacher Training RYT 200 – taught by Jo Phee & Jo Barnett (senior students and primary assistants of Paul and Suzee Grilley), in Ubud, Indonesia.

Both hold Thai Bodywork Certificates, and often return to Chiang Mai, Thailand, to further their knowledge on the subject of Thai Yogic Stretches. Both Ajay and Sapna completed the ‘Game Changers Programme’ with Tomasz Goetel, and ‘Practical Anatomy’ with Elonne Stockton and Arielle Nash at Samahita, Thailand.
